RE: Inverter low voltage problem when starting the generator.

A capacitor will not cure it. This is a normal condition. As suggested a very small ups should do the trick.

RE: Unusual 20A fuse in Class A

If this is a glass fuse and the tab you are referring to will actually come off the end of the fuse then it is a "fuse tap". A convenient place to get power for after market equipment.

RE: Biz is slow, economy sucks, where are all the $$$ Deals $$$

I agree. I have my eye on two RV's but their price is only %25 off and they don't act hungry. Of course they don't want or need my trade either. My 3 yr old rv is paid for and it would be a good time to buy but they can't offer squat on the trade. Catch 22 again.

RE: Electrical System Trouble

Your batteries should be running the lights when the converter is not on. It sounds like you have an open circuit to your batteries or they are fried and the converter is doing all the work to run everything. The converter is heating up and tripping off because of the work load. The fan is trying to cool the converter but it is still getting to hot. When you reduce the load it takes longer for the fan to come on and the converter to kick off.
I would start at the batteries with a voltmeter and check the voltage across them. I would also use a hydrometer and check them. Be sure your converter is charging them.
Your converter could have an overload circuit that is reset by removing the 120 volts which is what you are doing by cycling the GFI breaker.
Grab a voltmeter and check those batteries and find out why they don't run the lights when the converter is not powered up.

RE: Windows Photo Gallery- DVD Burning

What resolution did you take the still pictures in. You need a minimum of 1 megapixel to look decent on a tv. Three megapixel pictures work very well for me.
As for the program you are using I have no experience. I use the built in Windows Movie Maker program and get excellent results for slide shows. It is a very easy program to use and add music, effects, titles etc.
I do not use Windows Movie Maker for my DVD home movies because it outputs videos in MPEG 1 format which is only equivalent to old VHS as far as my eye is concerned. This is really to bad because the program is really easy to use.

RE: Isolator causes parasitic load ?

Just because you have a .5 volt drop across the isolator does not mean there is any substantial current flow. You can get fooled by the extreme sensitivity of a digital voltmeter. If you know how to measure current with it then place it in series with the camper batteries and see if there really is any current flow.

RE: 12 power source activated by ignition switch

I have installed a new battery isolator solenoid and a Kwikee power step.(Is this a replacement solenoid or a "new one") I know the battery isolator needs an electrical source which is controlled by the ignition switch - can I run a wire from the the starter solenoid (terminal which has a wire coming from the ignition switch) directly to the small terminal of the battery isolator solenoid? (no, because the starter solenoid only has ignition voltage while the key is turned to the start position. ) If so do I need to use an in-line fuse as well? ( A fuse is a good idea. You can find a source powered when the key is in the on position on the fuse panel)
Further - the Kwikee power step controller has a function which is suppose to retract the stair automatically if you start the engine. This wire is now connected to terminal 87 of a bosch type relay - but has nothing connected to terminal 86 which controls whether terminal 87 is energized. If the starter solenoid is connected to the battery isolator solenoid ... would connecting terminal 86 to the battery solenoid provide power to the switch energizing terminal 87? (no.Once you have the proper Ignition switched voltage on pin 86 you need to jumper that same voltage to pin 30 so that as the relay energizes the voltage will go from pin 30 to pin 87) (To complete the relay circuit so it will pull in/energize you need to ground pin 85.
If the above makes any sense ... would an alternative configuration work as well. Run a wire from the starter solenoid to terminal 86 - then run two wires from terminal 87 .. one to the Kwikee step and one to the battery isolator? (no)
Thanks for your help.
Find an ignition source that comes on such as your radio source when the ignition is turned on. Use that voltage to drive your isolator relay and your Kwikee step relay. Do one thing at a time. Get your isolator relay working. Then it is easy to move on to the Bosh relay setup. I would highly recommend a cheap automotive test light. One that has the wire with an alligator clip on the end of a wire and an awl type handle with a bulb inside. These are great tools for sorting things out.

RE: After TV goes all digitial will the range increase?

I would not bet on an increase myself.
Same here.
In High Definition Radio, you lose range on the stations you can receive. Don't ask me why but I think the same would be for Digital TV.
What is high definition radio ?

RE: Restoring a Lodge Cast Iron Skillet

We put ours directly in a wood fire and let the old stuff burn out. After it cools you can wash and season it as you would a new pan.
Ditto. My mom taught me this trick every fall when it was leaf burning time she would through her cast iron skillets in the fire and then wash and re-season. She said it got the "impurities" out of the iron.
Another vote for the campfire. They come out nice and clean and all I do is re-oil outside and inside with cooking oil when just cool enough to touch.

RE: Accounting software

If you understand Debits and Credits get Peachtree. If not, get Quickbooks. Quicken is a great checkbook program and allows you to keep track of your cash flow but will not keep track of payables and receivables well. It will also be impossible to properly depreciate and track your equipment or other assets with Quicken.
As an accountant I prefer Peachtree as it allows you to do your accounting as learned in college (account numbers, journal entries, etc.), but most non accountants prefer Quickbooks.
Quickbooks pro allows account numbers and journal entries but it is not cheap to keep. Quicken is a great basic program.

RE: After TV goes all digitial will the range increase?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe in a lab. with perfect conditions. Out here in the real world where most of us live, it just isn't so. (I own a telecommunications company and do this for a living) I have read of many complaints where people had a good clear analog signal, and after switching to digital, those same stations were totally un-watchable(I own a telecommunications company and do this for a living)
In our own case, also, switching to digital has caused us to lose several stations. We initially get the channel and within less than a minute, the picture locks up, spits, sputters, and then comes back in, then goes out, just like when trying to watch satellite tv during a heavy rain storm. Around here, we only have 1 station with 20 miles, which we can still get. All the others, are further away, and we have lost them due to the digital signal.
The reality is that UHF just does not travel as well with the same transmit power. The antenna from the transmitter may not be as high or have equal gain.

RE: After TV goes all digitial will the range increase?

I was told by an electronic tech, that digital takes 3 times as much power to go the same distance as analog, so unless the stations triple their power they won't carry as far.
I am an ET, certified, FCC licensed.(34 yrs) This sounds like an old tech that may have been involved with early digital technology used by the military and police. We used to experience a decrease in range when the scramblers were turned on. This has been eliminated with today’s technology of compression. Just think of the speed increases in internet. Another example is cellular phones. The compression technology is incredible. We can get 6 voice channels where one used to exist.
With current "digital" technology, we are actually seeing an increase in effective range with the same transmit power. I try to explain this by going back to telegraphy. The old dots and dashes. The long range capability is so useful because a human ear can detect the faintest dot and dash even among a very poor signal. Since digital is sending a 1 or a 0. a dot and a dash essentially, we are able to re-build the information by intuitively replacing missing dots and dashes.
Now the issue that could make a difference is the frequency range being transmitted. VHF travels further for a given power than UHF. UHF tends to penetrate building better.
Overall, I suspect the digital should be excellent as long as the receiver is working properly.

RE: Surround System Help

Really need a better block diagram in my mind for this one. You should be adjusting the volume via the surround sound amp.
That said, the volume coming out of the tv should be adjustable and if it is not, go through the tv menu sound setup and see if it is set for a fixed output.

RE: Jump start house batteries

You need to take the normal precautions and be sure you have ventilated the area around the batteries very well. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and even some bottled water in case of an emergency. Run the vehicle about 10-15 minutes before trying to start the generator. The generator is the best idea because it takes a lot less power to start it than the big engine. Once the generator has started and you carefully disconnect the jumper cables then let the generator run for 20-30 minutes to get the house batteries up a bit. At that time you can hit the AUX switch and start the big engine.
